In today’s world, students often lack the written and verbal skills to defend a position. Therefore, middle school students must be taught the basic skills towards formulating an argument; especially the importance of picking a side, as opposed to being in the middle of the debate. The students would be able to carry these written and verbal skills into many different fields and industries, furthering their potential professionally.
Finally, this activity gives the students the opportunity to make their own inferences from information presented; a skill often lacking in current students. By providing the students with the information, they can begin to interpret and formulate their own ideas. I strongly feel this is a universal skill that can be carried over into many professional careers, furthering the hiring potential of the current generation of students; especially with the new industries and fields that do not exist yet, but will be filled by these students.
